Google declares war on Mexican drug cartels

Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman recently visited Mexico’s most violent cities where civic leaders asked him for help. This week at a conference on international crime in California, Schmidt said “They were looking for a universal hammer to protect them. For me the answer was obvious. It was technology.”

Experts claimed at the conference that Drug-dealing organizations run money laundering networks that handle an estimated $25 billion a year in drug profit and often use more sophisticated technology than law enforcement such as mapping software that tracks the location of police from high-tech control rooms, remote control submarines and military-grade rocket launchers.

The Google proposal is create an anonymous network through which citizens can safely report cartel activity without fear of retribution and create community web platforms to identify how individuals are connected to each other, to bank accounts and even to corrupt government officials.

Google claims that empowering the Mexican people with technology should produce a step forward in the fight against the drug cartels, and that's a good thing.

The pen that could replace whiteboards

Electronic company Interphase unveiled Penveu at the DEMO 2012 event held this week in Santa Clara, California. It is a electronic pen that converts just any flat surface into an interactive display by using a technology known as "embedded computer vision," which was originally designed for spacecraft and military navigation systems.

Yoram Solomon, vice president and general manager of Penveu, said in a statement to VentureBeat “The incumbent interactive whiteboard manufacturers have been using the same technology for almost 20 years. They don’t want to see change, we had no vested interest in the existing technology, but we had all the incentives in the world to bring new technology and disrupt this market with a much better product for a fraction of the cost of existing products in this market.”

After connecting to any standard analog computer screen (an old projector, TV or monitor), Penveu is able to draw, write and highlight in nine bright colors, without staining the surface. It works like a portable electronic wand and the "ink" can be erased with the push of a button, content such as a class lesson or a slide show can be saved for future reference. The device will cost around $499 for educational use, compared to the price of interactive whiteboards that can cost over $ 2,000.

This electronic pen could revolutionise the traditional idea of a classroom as it is easier to assemble and use. Basically it becomes an interactive screen that students and teachers can use from anywhere in the classroom.

Windows 8 new features

The new Windows 8 has a new graphical user interface called metro, it is a touch interface which the user can use to access information and manage the content in a very simple way, this new version of Windows is a radical departure from Windows 7, "We reimagined windows" said the president of the Windows and Windows Live division Steven Sinofsky. Windows 7 showed a great improvement but Microsoft claims that Windows 8 is much better due to the kernel for the cloud, ARM processor support (for tablet), optimisation for mobile devices and the extensive menu for system settings.

One of the most important features of the new system is the Windows store which allows developers to sell their applications all over the world, the way users purchase software is changed since licenses are associated with the Windows Live account and all devices that we link to that account can use the software purchased.

Another important aspect is the cloud storage and the remote access to your hard drive through the SkyDrive service. Microsoft explains that “it keeps all the content from the cloud services you use most (photos, email, calendar and contacts) up to date across all your devices”.

Among the most prominent changes we can mention the desktop environment as an interface designed for mobile devices is the default interface, security is also inspired by mobile technology so Windows 8 introduces a gesture recognition system to login to the system. The new start menu shows 21 programs without moving the view, users can choose and see their programs which are organised by groups rather than alphabetically. Windows 8 has a new task manager and a new Windows administrator very similar to Microsoft Office design.

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 8 is designed for last generation hardware and being compatible with a wide range of devices from tablets to laptops.
